Overview

What it does.

Float is a cash-flow forecasting tool that connects to QuickBooks Online, Xero or FreeAgent, pulls invoices, bills and bank balances, and builds a rolling forecast up to three years out. Users layer budgets and scenarios on top, such as hiring a second technician, opening a new location or a key customer paying 30 days late, and see the projected bank balance for each. Expected payment dates can be adjusted per invoice, and the weekly cash summary email keeps owners informed without opening the app. Small service firms, agencies and shops with lumpy cash use it to avoid overdrafts and time big purchases. Accountants and bookkeepers can manage multiple clients through a partner program. A small team would connect the accounting system, set a baseline forecast, then build two scenarios for the next quarter and review variance monthly. Caveat: Float only works if the underlying accounting data is current and reconciled, and it does not connect directly to banks outside the accounting integration.

Verdict

Who it suits.Who it doesn’t.

Best for

  • Small businesses on QuickBooks or Xero that want a visual cash forecast and scenario planning without spreadsheets.
  • Understanding which customers or expense categories drive cash swings.
  • Sharing a projected cash position with partners, lenders or investors.
  • Monthly cash forecasts and scenario comparisons for owners and advisors.

Not ideal for

  • Businesses whose books are updated only at tax time, since the forecast depends on live accounting data.
  • Analysis stays within cash flow; no sales or marketing data.
  • Export and presentation formats are limited to charts and spreadsheets.
  • Budget-versus-actual reporting is simpler than full FP&A suites.
