Grammarly
AI writing assistant for grammar, tone, clarity, and rewrites.
Readability editor that highlights hard sentences and passive voice, with paid AI rewrites that simplify text.

Overview
Hemingway Editor is a browser-based writing editor that color-codes long sentences, adverbs, passive voice, and complex words, and assigns a readability grade. The Plus subscription adds AI tools that rewrite highlighted sentences to be simpler, fix grammar, adjust tone, and give whole-document feedback, with monthly allowances of 5,000 or 10,000 AI sentence rewrites depending on tier. It imports and exports Word and Markdown files and publishes to WordPress and Medium. Small businesses use it to make website copy, FAQs, policies, and emails easier to read, which matters for conversion and support deflection. The free editor is fully usable for highlighting, so a team can adopt it at no cost and pay only for rewrites. One caveat is that the tool rewards short, plain sentences and can push copy toward a flat style, so brand voice still needs a human pass.
