Overview
Metabase is a business intelligence platform that connects directly to databases such as Postgres, MySQL, BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift and SQL Server and lets non-technical staff build questions and dashboards with a point-and-click query builder; analysts can drop into SQL. Metabase AI adds a natural-language layer that writes SQL, explains queries, fixes errors and answers questions against modelled data, and Pro plans let embedded customers ask questions in their own portals. Dashboards can be scheduled to Slack and email, subscriptions alert on thresholds and models define reusable metrics. The open-source edition is free to self-host with unlimited users, while Metabase Cloud handles hosting and upgrades. Small product and operations teams with a Postgres or warehouse use it as the first shared source of truth. A pilot is launching Cloud Starter against a read replica and rebuilding three spreadsheet reports as dashboards. Caveat: self-hosting requires someone to manage upgrades and backups, and AI answers are only as good as the data model, so some time spent defining models up front pays off.
