Overview

What it does.

FreshBooks is accounting software built around invoicing for freelancers and small service businesses such as contractors, agencies, cleaners and consultants. It handles estimates, proposals, recurring invoices, online payments, time tracking and project billing, with double-entry reports on higher plans. Automation includes receipt capture that reads vendor, date and amount, bank transactions auto-categorized into expense accounts, and scheduled late-payment reminders and late fees. Clients can pay by card, ACH or Apple Pay from the invoice itself. It connects to Gusto for payroll, Stripe and PayPal for payments, plus Shopify, Squarespace, HubSpot and Zapier. A small team would pilot it by moving one month of invoicing and expenses over, checking the auto-categorization against the prior bookkeeping, and measuring days-to-paid after reminders switch on. Caveat: plans are capped by number of billable clients, and each additional team member costs $11 per month, so pricing climbs for growing teams with many customers.
